The problem is that the film wants to be too many things. It wants to be an action/adventure that takes its characters to exciting locales, a heart-warming story of family, an incisive commentary on global warming, and a cautionary tale of how vengeance can consume a person. It also wants to be a commercial for Guinness beer and motorcycles and whatever else Jason Momoa seemingly finds cool.

<![CDATA[Ferrari Review: Come For The Racing, Stay For Thoughtful Drama]]> "Two objects cannot occupy the same point in space at the same moment in time." This line has been a focus of the trailers for Michael Mann's Ferrari, and was lodged in my memory. I now understand why it's been so foregrounded — it ended up being my guide through the movie's ideas. In the scene in which it's spoken by a frustrated Enzo Ferrari to his racers, it resounds with obvious truth. The delivery is part of this; as a general rule, Enzo does not speak so much as proclaim. But your experience with this story and how it's told will depend on your willingness to question his assertion, as I believe Ferrari does.

<![CDATA[Migration Review: Illumination's Latest Is A Safe But Sweet Adventure Tale For Families To Enjoy]]> I had my qualms going into Migration, as animated movies aimed at kids can sometimes be cloying in their attempts to pander to parents and other adults. Director Benjamin Renner — who also shares credit for the story — avoids this pitfall by opting for a more straightforward sincerity, aided by Mike White's (of The White Lotus and School of Rock fame) smart screenplay. The "lesson" of the movie is laid out plainly in the opening scenes, but the characters are charming enough to set aside the feeling of being schooled by the screen.

<![CDATA[The Color Purple Review: Run, Don't Walk To See This Gorgeous, Soulful Musical Adaptation]]> Based on the 1982 Pulitzer-Prize winning novel of the same name, 1985's The Color Purple made its debut with Steven Spielberg as the director. The coming-of-age period drama was originally met with positive reviews, though its inclusion of violence, rape, and incest sparked controversy for audiences everywhere. Still, it made its mark on film history thanks to a great cast that stole our hearts. Thirty-eight years later, director Blitz Bazawule assembled a new cast to tell the story of unwavering sisterhood and resilience. The Color Purple is an adaptation of the Broadway musical, which itself is based on the book and movie, but it contains as much soul and great storytelling as the first film.

<![CDATA[Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget Review - Funny & Energetic, The Netflix Sequel Doesn't Disappoint]]> Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget has all the momentum of the original and some great new additions to the cast. Director Sam Fell does a good job with a script penned by Karey Kirkpatrick, John O'Farrell, and Rachel Tunnard. Although the film is not as dark as its predecessor, it has the same overall effect. The animation is just as good, and fans of the most recent season of Star Wars: Visions will recognize the work of Pathé and Aardman Animations. Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is certainly more kid-friendly, but it will please audiences of all ages.

<![CDATA[The Boys In The Boat Review: George Clooney Directs A Hollow, Passive, Emotionless Sports Biopic]]> Directed by George Clooney from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, The Boys in the Boat takes an intriguing story and somehow makes it uninteresting. The film is beautiful to look at, and Alexandre Desplat’s score is moving, but Clooney’s film doesn’t leave an impression. It’s too slow-going, and the characters lack personality, which made it hard for me to get invested in their stories. There are plenty of sports dramas, but they’re usually engaging, heartfelt, and occasionally even fun. But there’s a self-seriousness and emotional detachment that leaves the biopic struggling to make it to the finish line.

<![CDATA[Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire Review - Netflix Sci-Fi Epic Is Peak Zack Snyder (For Better Or Worse)]]> Few directors seem as controversial or beloved as Zack Snyder. The director who famously kicked off the DCEU in 2013 and whose cut of Justice League sparked a fierce fan campaign has his admirers and his haters, and he is frequently the subject of online discourse. To be perfectly frank, I’ve never felt that Snyder’s work was my cup of tea, but I was also fully aware that all I had seen from him was his DC movies. Looking ahead to Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, I was genuinely curious to see whether an original sci-fi would endear me more to him. Having watched all two hours and 14 minutes of it, I can say that while there are many elements I enjoyed, there are more that left me frustrated. With Rebel Moon, Snyder is positively bursting with exciting ideas, but they lack compelling characters and a solid plot to hold them up.

<![CDATA[The Zone Of Interest Review: World War II Drama Is A Startling Masterpiece & One Of 2023's Best Films]]> Ten years after his last film, Jonathan Glazer returns with The Zone of Interest, an exacting masterpiece that settles into a domestic rhythm horrifying in its gestures at normalcy. The Zone of Interest is based on Martin Amis' novel of the same name, but many of its similarities end there as the director instead focuses on Rudolf Höss, the longestserving commandant of Auschwitz.

<![CDATA[The Iron Claw Review: Zac Efron & Holt McCallany Astonish In Emotional, Harrowing Wrestling Biopic]]> I’ll admit I knew very little about the Von Erich family before The Iron Claw — wrestling isn’t particularly my forte. The film was so good and so moving, though, that it was easy to be pulled into their world. Written and directed by Sean Durkin, The Iron Claw boasts Zac Efron’s best performance to date, and he excels at bringing a deep sense of loss, pain, and heartbreak to his role. The biopic itself, made with the blessing of Kevin Von Erich, was made with a lot of respect and heart.

<![CDATA[Merry Little Batman Review: DC's Latest Animation Is The Holiday Movie We Didn't Know We Needed]]> Mike Roth’s Merry Little Batman is a kid-friendly addition to the DC animated universe that the whole family can enjoy. The art style is reminiscent of 2010s Cartoon Network and is as hilarious as it is nostalgic, harkening back to Roth’s time on Regular Show. We have pretty much only seen one version of Damian Wayne up to this point, and Merry Little Batman is bold enough to flip the script on the son of Batman. The film is genuinely funny, and the voice acting is top-notch, including our newest Batman, Luke Wilson. Just in time for the holidays, writers Morgan Evans (Teen Titans Go!) and Jase Ricci have found the perfect balance of heart and hilarity in this cartoon caper.
